Image Formats
JPEG
The JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) format employs lossy compression and is particularly suitable for photographs and images with continuous tones. It finds common usage in web-based applications and photography where maintaining a balance between image quality and file size is crucial. The JPG extension is essentially interchangeable with JPEG, serving as an alternative file extension for storing compressed photographic images.
JFIF
JFIF (JPEG File Interchange Format) represents a standard for representing JPEG files in a simplified format, commonly used for storing and exchanging JPEG-encoded images.
GIF
The GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) utilizes lossless compression, offering support for animations and is characterized by its ability to display a sequence of images in a loop. Despite its lossless nature, GIF is limited to a palette of 256 colors, making it suitable for graphics with a limited color range. It has gained popularity for its capability to create simple animations, making it a preferred choice for web graphics, logos, and other visual elements. The GIF format is often employed in scenarios where a lightweight and widely supported solution for basic animations and graphical elements on the web is required.
PNG
PNG (Portable Network Graphics) utilizes lossless compression and supports transparency along with a broad spectrum of colors. This format is ideal for images featuring sharp edges, text, and graphics, making it commonly employed for logos, icons, and various web graphics.
WEBP
WEBP, developed by Google, supports both lossless and lossy compression, transparency, and animations. Known for its high compression efficiency, WEBP is particularly well-suited for web images, providing smaller file sizes without significant quality loss.
