Overview of Sales Tax
Sales tax is a consumption tax imposed by the government on the sale of goods and services. It is typically a percentage of the purchase price and is collected by the seller at the time of the transaction. The terminology for sales tax varies across countries:
- USA: There is no federal sales tax. Sales tax is levied at the state level, and rates can vary widely.
- UK: Value Added Tax (VAT) is the equivalent of sales tax and added to most products and services. VAT standard rate is 20%.
- Canada: The rate of value-added federal Goods and Services Tax is 5 percent. In addition, every province in Canada except Alberta has either a Provincial Sales Tax (PST) or the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST), which is a single, blended combination of the GST and PST. Sales tax rates vary by province.
- Australia: The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a 10% tax on most goods and services.
- European Union: The European Union value-added tax (EU VAT) applies to most goods and services and is mandatory for member states of the European Union. VAT rates across EU member states vary. Standard rates typically range from 17% to 27%, with most countries having a standard rate around 20%. Some countries also have reduced rates for specific goods and services, while a few have multiple rates.
- India: The Goods and Services Tax (GST) replaced VAT and is used in India on the supply of goods and services. The GST rates are categorized into multiple slabs (form 0% to 28%), each applicable to different types of goods and services.
