To perform conversion between various time units, start by selecting the original unit using the “From:” drop-down list and the target unit from the “To:” drop-down list. Then enter the original value into the input field on the left. The tool will instantly display the converted value at the top of the page.
This converter supports various time measurement units from the Sidereal and Solar systems of timekeeping.
Solar Time tracks the position of the Sun in the sky. It is based on a solar day - the time it takes for the Sun to return to the same position in the sky relative to an observer on Earth. Solar Time is used to create the standard time system that we commonly use, which is divided into hours, minutes, and seconds.
Sidereal Time is based on the Earth's rotation relative to distant stars rather than the Sun. It measures the time it takes for a particular star to return to the same position in the sky. Sidereal days are shorter than solar days. Sidereal time is used in astronomy and celestial navigation, providing a reference for observing celestial objects.
Time units:
Century:
- Centuries refer to periods of 100 years. 1 century = 100 years.
Day (d):
- A day is the time it takes for the Earth to complete one rotation on its axis relative to the Sun. 1 day = 24 hours.
Day (sidereal):
- Sidereal day is the time it takes for the Earth to complete one rotation relative to distant stars. It is slightly shorter than a solar day (23 hours, 56 minutes, 4.1 seconds).
Decade:
- Decades represent periods of 10 years. 1 decade = 10 years.
Femtosecond (fs):
- Femtoseconds are extremely short time intervals, equal to one quadrillionth (10^-15) of a second. 1 femtosecond = 1 × 10^-15 seconds.
Fortnight:
- A fortnight is a period of two weeks. 1 fortnight = 14 days.
Hour (h):
- An hour is 1/24th of a day. 1 hour = 1/24 day.
Hour (sidereal):
- Sidereal hour is 1/24th of a sidereal day. It is slightly shorter than a solar hour.
Microsecond (μs):
- Microseconds are one millionth (10^-6) of a second. 1 microsecond = 1 × 10^-6 seconds.
Millisecond (ms):
- Milliseconds are one thousandth (10^-3) of a second. 1 millisecond = 1 × 10^-3 seconds.
Minute (min):
- A minute is 1/60th of an hour. 1 minute = 1/1,440 days.
Minute (sidereal):
- Sidereal minute is 1/60th of a sidereal hour. It is slightly shorter than a solar minute.
Month (mean calendar):
- Mean calendar month is an average month length in a standard 365-day calendar year.
Nanosecond (ns):
- Nanoseconds are one billionth (10^-9) of a second. 1 nanosecond = 1 × 10^-9 seconds.
Picosecond (ps):
- Picoseconds are one trillionth (10^-12) of a second. 1 picosecond = 1 × 10^-12 seconds.
Quarter:
- Quarters represent periods of 3 months. 1 quarter = 3 months.
Second (s):
- A second is the base unit of time in the International System of Units (SI). 1 second = 1/86,400 days.
Second (sidereal):
- Sidereal second is based on the Earth's rotation relative to distant stars. It is slightly shorter than a solar second.
Shake:
- A shake is a unit of time equal to 10 nanoseconds. 1 shake = 10 nanoseconds.
Week:
- Weeks consist of 7 days. 1 week = 7 days.
Year (365 days):
- A standard year in many calendars is 365 days. 1 year = 365 days.
Year (sidereal):
- Sidereal year is the time it takes for the Earth to complete one orbit around the Sun relative to distant stars. It is slightly longer than a tropical year.
Year (tropical):
- Tropical year is the time it takes for the Sun to return to the same position in the sky with respect to the equator. 1 tropical year is approximately 365.25 days.
